A kayaker spotted the mammal around 11 a.m. about one mile off Scripps Pier and reported it to SeaWorld, said Lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma.
Members of the park’s animal rescue team and city lifeguards located the dolphin a short time later and were able to snare it and bring it close to the boat.
A SeaWorld rescuer removed the line, which was about 50 to 100 feet long and wrapped around the middle of the dolphin.
The dolphin was tired and showing signs of distress, Lerma said. Rescuers said that without intervention it most likely would have died.
Once the line was removed, the young mammal swam away and joined other dolphins that had stayed in the area as the rescue progressed.
“It was definitely a happy ending,” Lerma said. http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/feb/15/cres-rescue-baby-dolphin-distress/
Let's hope the baby dolphin learns from it's mistake and doesn't get trapped in another fishing line, otherwise it may end up in a can of tuna.
