Remember, Practice What You Preach

Today, the Board of Regents held a meeting and a very disrespectful lady decided to show up and make a fool of herself.
From the Sun: A heated exchange between a graduate teaching fellow and a member of the Nevada Board of Regents over proposed budget cuts kicked off today's special meeting of the 13-member panel, with the student threatening to organize a statewide boycott of the regents' business interests and board member Mark Alden rising to his feet to shout that the student was "out of line" in delivering her comments.
Gina Sully, who said she has two degrees from the College of Southern Nevada and two from UNLV, said: "I want to put a face to one of the students you encouraged to stay in Nevada for her career … a student who fears her degrees will be worth little on the national job market. I want to remind you today you are not our leaders; you are our representatives."
Sully, a 52-year-old former country club manager in New York, said she is working with others in the state to potentially organize the boycotts and walk the districts of regents who do not refuse any budget cuts adopted by state legislators and Gov. Brian Sandoval.
"I want them to refuse the cuts. I want them to refuse the cuts," she said.
Alden, a longtime board member, rose from his seat at the regents' horseshoe-shaped table at the head of the room, and said in response to Sully's comments: "You are dead wrong. Your comments are out of line. You're out of line (and show) complete disrespect."
Sully replied: "I don't owe you respect. You have to earn my respect."

First, Sully, you're right, you have to earn respect and you, ma'am have not earned any respect from me.
You are part of the reason why some colleges are in trouble. You have a total of 4 degrees from UNLV and CSN compliments of the Nevada taxpayer and you are still in school. Can we say professional student?
How much money do you think taxpayers have ponied up so you can get 4 degrees and still continue on in school? Thousands of dollars? Tens of thousands of dollars? Maybe over a hundred thousand dollars? And you are complaining. You are nothing but a education welfare queen.
And then you are calling for a boycott of conservative Regents who have been elected? Hey, fool, if you bothered to read the newspapers, and hopefully, you can read, when the liberals tried that in Wisconsin, it backfired and boycotted businesses thrived. So, nice try, idiot.
Finally, you say the UNLV should refuse the cuts. From the Sun: "I want them to refuse the cuts. I want them to refuse the cuts," she said.
While this education welfare queen may have 4 degrees and is working on another one, clearly, she is not intelligent nor educated.
How do you refuse a cut? Call up the governor and say that you are refusing the cut. the governor will laugh at you and continue to withhold the state money. Then what?
This silly old lady reminds me of Demi Moore in "A Few Good Men":
Jo: "Your Honor, we re-new our objection to Commander Stone's testimony, and ask that it be stricken from the record. And we further ask that the Court instruct the jury to lend no weight to this witness's testimony."
Judge: "The objection's overruled, counsel."

Jo: "Sir, the defense strenuously objects and requests a meeting in chambers so that his honor might have an opportunity to hear discussion before ruling on the objection."
Judge: "Noted. The witness is an expert and the court will hear his opinion!"
Sam: "I strenuously object? Is that how it works? Objection. Overruled. No, no, no, no, I strenuously object. Oh, well if you strenuously object, let me take a moment to reconsider."

So, silly old lady, you need to earn my respect before I ever publish anything positive about you. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

  1. Dan,
I know Gina Sully; I work with her and study with her at UNLV. Her days begin at 5am and often don't end until 10 or 11 pm. In addition to teaching composition and rhetoric, Gina spends long hours on research. She is a dedicated student and is highly respected for her razor sharp mind and impressive grasp of literary theory, rhetoric, women's studies, philosophy, and education. I am here to tell you that this woman is the real deal. If you have ever admired scholarship and the dedication it takes to be a truly educated and brilliant thinker, then I encourage you to pause in your ad hominem attacks.

Another thing that you don't know about Gina is that she works tirelessly on behalf of the community, both on campus and off. She has helped many students who couldn't afford outside tutoring, has worked to improve the lives of the homeless in So. Nevada, and she and her husband advise and give tangible support to abused women who want to escape their situations. Gina has helped countless people to improve themselves and change their lives.

Let me explain something else to you. Degrees are like ladders; they progress. Gina is working on a PhD. But before she could get to that stage, she obtained two associate degress, one BA and one MA. One does not jump from high school, or in Gina's case, the work force, to PhD. Each step of the way, Gina has been honored for the excellence of her scholarship.

There was a time when we respected people who wanted to better themselves. Gina is not only an example of a person who decided that she wanted education to improve her life, she is also an example of someone who is not content to take that journey alone. She believes that we are indeed our brothers' keepers and that one's efforts must never be on behalf of onesself alone.

You are quite mistaken in your assessment.
    Cynthia

  2. Thank you Cynthia, but a lot of people have done what she has done. Whe i was going through college, I worked several different jobs and voluteered as a firefighter and EMT.
I am sure Sully is a hard worker. I have no problem with that.
However, if you are going to throw crap around saying that you need to earn respect and then act in a disrespectful way, then you need to be prepared to take it as well.
I might also add, if the Regent was a liberal, the Regent wouldn't need to have earned her respect. She didn't know the Regent personally, just their percieved politics. that is pretty classless.

  3. Dan,
May I point out that you call Gina "fool," and "idiot" in your original post; that's not very respectful. Not once has Gina resorted to name calling, and I would like to ask you to rise to that same level.
I am surprised, given the independent tone of your blog, that you go not agree with Gina that our elected officials must both earn our respect and represent our interests. Do you not agree with that premise?
I agree that others have done what Gina is doing, and they also have my admiration. I simply wanted to point out that she does not deserve the attack you originally levied at her. She was not "throw[ing] crap around," but pointing out some very basic American principles. You called Gina "an education welfare queen" before knowing anything about her, and I felt the need to refute your character attack.

  4. PS. I just watched "A Few Good Men," and it was the Demi Moore character who first introduced the idea of a "code red" to the Tom Cruise character. So, while her passion may have induced her to "abject strenuously," had it not been for her, the corruption in the higher up leadership would never have been exposed. She is actually a heroine in that movie. I don't know about you, but I don't find passion for what is right to be "classless."

  5. Who is correct? The author of "a education welfare queen" or the author of "an education welfare queen"? Please proofread your remarks before you criticize another's level of education.
    Thank you.
