From the Denver Post: A Florida doctor has sued Dollar Rent a Car in
U.S. District Court in Denver alleging that he and other consumers have
been charged for services which they specifically declined when renting
from Dollar.
Dr. Allen Friedman, of Sarasota, Fl. claimed that
on Nov. 20, 2011, he picked up a car at the Dollar facility at Denver
International Airport.
At the airport, Friedman said he declined a
variety of insurance options and other services. He said he told the
agent that he was covered by both his own existing insurance and by
coverage provided by his credit card.
Friedman said he returned the car to Dollar on Nov. 29, with a full tank of gas.
It
was only after he got home, that he looked at his receipt and saw he
was charged $215.91 for insurance he had specifically declined and
$53.91 for roadside assistance which he hadn't even been offered,
according to the lawsuit....
Friedman later obtained copies of his
original contract and, according to the allegations in the lawsuit, he
realized his signature had been forged.
"This is a case where Dollar has organized a scheme to defraud consumers to increase revenues," the lawsuit alleged.
"The company's employees and agents constantly trick consumers into buying insurance they did not want, " the lawsuit alleges.
Friedman claims the scheme has been going on for at least the last four years.
He said he is seeking more than $5 million for himself and a proposed class of consumers who have rented from Dollar.
