Today is the last race for the IZOD Indy car season with Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay battling for the series point championship.
Power had a 17 point lead on Hunter-Reay when Power spun and crashed his car into the wall on lap 54.
You would think that with a crushed back end, Power's day would be done and you might be wrong.
Right now, Power has 18 mechanics working on the car to get the car back onto the track and try to pick up some points.
With almost 100 laps run out 250, there is still a lot of time left to race and Hunter-Reay has to finish 6th place or better to win the championship and right now, Hunter-Reay is in 8th and may have a problem with a shock absorber.
Exciting times in racing.
Update: Power came out and ran 12 laps to pass another driver in place. Now Hunter-Reay has to finish in 5th place and with 58 laps he is in 6th place, about 2 seconds behind the leaders.
BTW, the leaders are running 216 mph a lap right now.
Update: With 9 laps to go, Tony Kaanan spun and hit the wall and they brought out the red flag with 7 laps to go so they can clean up the track
Micael Andretti, owner of Hunter-Reay's car is pissed because they have not thrown a red flag this close to the finish, especially with minimal clean up needed because of the crash. Maybe someone from Indy Cars is throwing a favor to Roger Penske, owner of Will Power's car.
So, with 7 laps, Hunter-Reay is in 3rd place, about 6 point lead on Power, with at least 1 re-start left.
It's over, as Ed Carpenter won the race and Hunter-Reay comes in 5th place and wins the championship. Takuma Sato spun and crashed on the last lap, bringing out the yellow flag.
This is Hunter-Reay's 1st championship and Michael Andretti's 4th championship as a team owner.
What an end to a great season and hopefully the Indy cars will come back even stronger.
