As many of you know, I am a teacher at a public high school here in Clark County (Las Vegas) and have been for about 6 years.
One of the biggest waste of money and resources is in the lunch program, where the vast majority most of the kids at our school get to eat a free school breakfast and lunch. Every morning and lunch, food is thrown away by the kids and it's not a little amount of food- it's a lot. Further, some of the food items thrown away could be salvaged- items like milk, juice, brownies, burritos etc. But that food is thrown away everyday.
However, the school cafeteria's also throw away food each day. Food that is not sold, like burritos and cinnamon rolls are thrown away at breakfast and at lunch, they throw away salads and other sandwiches.
In Las Vegas, we also have a homeless problem and also have numerous homeless shelters and soup kitchens that could use some food. We also have Meals on Wheels for the elderly and the disabled that probably could use food for their program.
But for some reason, the Clark County School District chooses to throw away the food into garbage cans instead of donating the food to charity.
You know your grandparents and mine would be cringing at the thought of throwing away good food but I guess throwing away good food is the new normal.
