Romney's Right

From the San Francisco Chronicle: Already scrambling to steady a struggling campaign, Republican Mitt Romney confronted a new headache Monday after a video surfaced showing him telling wealthy donors that almost half of all Americans "believe they are victims" entitled to extensive government support. He added that as a candidate for the White House, "my job is not to worry about those people."
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," Romney is shown saying in a video posted online by the magazine. "There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it."
"Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax," Romney said.
So, where is Romney wrong?

  1. Let's assume he's dead right. . . politicians who want to get elected do not insult 47% of the population.

But he's not quite right, either. The number is right, the breakdown is problematic for him. For instance, some of the people not paying taxes get a break because of Bush tax cuts which Romney wants to extend permanently. Also, Romney's reasoning for WHY people don't pay income tax boils down to (or at least sounds like) they're just lazy and irresponsible. ALL OF THEM? Really?

Beyond all of THAT, Romney can NOT taxes, and percentage paid a huge issue, can he? The guy who is dodging ANY disclosure of what he paid beyond two partial years?

  2. That last part should read: Romney can NOT want taxes, and percentage paid to be a huge issue, can he? The guy who is dodging ANY disclosure of what he paid beyond two partial years?

(My wireless keyboard may need some new batteries)

Oh, and incidentally? I'm an Obama supporter, and I get zero government assistance. So if 47% of the public is AUTOMATICALLY in Obama's corner, it's not going to take many people like me to put him over the top.

  3. Well, you certainly right about you and putting Obama over the top. But my vote will cancel out your vote. And my wife's will cancel out your partner's vote. Sooo. We will see.
And what is it with you and electronics?

  4. I for one can't believe the media focusing on this non-issue. We have turmoil in the Middle East, high unemployment, high gas prices and a war on religious freedom. The media should call itself what it is which is an arm of the Obama reelection committee. This is shameful. By the way Romney is correct.

  5. This is not a non-issue, anonymous. It's every bit as bad as when the right got all pissy about Obama saying that people cling to guns and god. Obama was right in that instance, and wasn't trying to insult anybody. But the "liberal media" ran with that (and Jeramiah Wright, and Bill Ayers, and Joe the freakin' Plumber) in 2008.
