From the Denver Post:
Facing a wave of protest, the federal Bureau of Land Management Wednesday removed 20,000 acres in the North Fork Valley in western Colorado from its February oil and gas lease sale.
"We've listened to concerns raised in numerous comments and public meetings," said Helen Hankins, BLM's Colorado director, in a statement. "We are responding by deferring the North Fork Valley parcels at this time."
The BLM oversees oil, gas and mineral leasing on all federal lands.
The decision prompted praise from valley residents and criticism from industry groups.
"We applaud the agency for slowing down and taking a closer look at the severe impacts of drilling ," said Jim Ramey, director of Paonia-based Citizens for a Healthy Community.
But David Ludlam, executive director of the Western Slope Colorado Oil and Gas Association, called the North Fork "a case study" of the flaws in the Obama administration's leasing reforms.
Among the reforms initiated by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar were to publicly identify parcels early in the process, add reviews and seek public input.
In the North Fork these steps led to public protests and months of additional assessments. "They took a system that was broken and broke it some more," Ludlam said.

Not only will this eliminate areas to drill for gas and oil, it will also kill potential jobs in the oil industry, jobs that pay good money.
No wonder gas prices are so high and why we have such a high unemployment rate, with little hope of recovery.
