Patrick Coolican is another, in a long line, of columnists for the Las Vegas Sun who are unethical and just plain ignorant and Coolican's rant this past week against Dean Heller shows us once again how ignorant this guy is.
Coolican writes about Dean Heller's attempt to go after the Hispanic vote.
First Coolican rips Heller about not wanting to vote for the Dream Act. One of the provisions of the Dream Act is that a person must complete 2 years of school or military service. Perhaps Coolican missed this, but the military is laying off thousands upon thousands of service men and women. Would Coolican support illegals jump to the head of the line in getting into the military?
If a person doesn't do military service, then a person must attend college for 2 years. OK, but what about those who cannot attend college because of cost or because they are not smart enoguh- what happens to those people? Is Coolican saying, sorry, buddy, the person who attends ITT can stay in the U.S. but because of financial hardships, you have to go? Of course Coolican would not say this- he wants everyone to stay. Further, Coolican, what would you do with the parents of the kids who qualify for the Dream Act? Deport them?
Coolican says the GOP insults the Hispanic community when it deals with immigration. However, Coolican says this: Heller says we’re the only industrialized nation in the world with birthright citizenship.
Note to Heller: We’re also the only industrialized country in the world without universal health care. So what?

Well, Mexico and Turkey do not have universal health care. Ooops, Coolican just insulted Mexico with his ignorance.
Coolican also offers this gem of stupidity: Then there’s the dreaded “anchor babies.” Heller signed on to legislation that would end automatic citizenship for babies born in the United States, instead requiring that to qualify for citizenship one parent must already be a citizen.
You can imagine how this utterly un-American policy might offend Hispanics. It offends me because more than likely my ancestors would have been disqualified for citizenship. They came over on a boat from Ireland and had a lot of babies.
So, Coolican, did you ancestors come over on the boat and then run away from the government people who dealt with immigration or did they come over on the boat and legally gain citizenship? My guess is that is was the latter.
And a question: Let’s say a child was born here to two noncitizens. Of what country is the child a citizen? The answer is likely none, so we would be creating a population of stateless refugees right here in America. Genius! Hey genius, they would be a citizen of the parents hom country, not the U.S.
Coolican is one of those clowns who think if we pass the Dream Act or or other comprehensive immigration reform, it will solve all our problems. However, as we have seen in the past, no matter what you do, nothing seems to have an affect on illegal immigration, and the illegal immigration problem is the fault of both parties.
So what I do?
1. Build a fence on the Southern border.
2. Immediately deport anyone convicted of a crime- felony or misdemeanor.
3. No public assistance of any kind for illegals including student loans and grants from the U.S. government.
4. If a person who is in the U.S. illegally needs to be hospitalized and doesn't have the means to pay for it, put them on an air or ground ambulance once they are stabilized and send them back to their home country, unless their home country agrees in advance to pay for the medical bills.
5. Educate the K-12 kids who are here, but bill their home country for the added expenses.
I'm sure with Coolican's genius mind, he would agree with these 5 steps, but I doubt it. Coolican is a hard core lefty of the Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson mold- lot's of hot air but really says nothing of substance.
