The Madison Children's Museum will continue to operate without a full
liquor license after the state raised concerns about the museum's
license application.
The application, which was submitted by the
Roman Candle Pizzeria located on the museum's ground floor, was placed
on file at Tuesday's City Council meeting.
Mark Woulf, the city's
alcohol policy coordinator, said the museum decided not to pursue the
license due to concerns raised by the state after the city's Alcohol
License Review Committee unanimously recommended the license last month.
During past after-hours events, the museum, located at 100 N. Hamilton St., served alcohol using the license of other caterers.
It
hosted about 35 catered events last year and is expected to have 35 to
40 events in 2013, according to the museum's executive director Ruth
Shelly.
Under the license proposal alcohol would only have been
provided outside of normal museum business hours and would never be sold
to museum patrons out of the Roman Candle Sparkler Café.
"The
state Department of Revenue contacted the city with the basic concern
that you can't turn off and on a license once it's been issued," Woulf
said, adding that children are not allowed to be unsupervised in an
alcohol-licensed establishment.
