From Fox News: "Environmentalists, already peeved with the administration’s handling of the Gulf oil spill, are accusing President Obama of breaking his campaign pledge to end the slaughter of whales.
The Obama administration is leading an effort within the International Whaling Commission to lift a 24-year international ban on commercial whaling for Japan, Norway and Iceland, the remaining three countries in the 88-member commission that still hunt whales."
Obama's response: "Under Obama's deal, the three whaling countries would be allowed to keep hunting whales for a 10-year period in reduced numbers. The whaling countries in return would agree to tighter oversight of their operations, including participation in a whale DNA registry. "
First, I think it is kind of hypocritical for the U.S. to complain about whale hunting while the Fed's allow whale hunting by the native Alaskans and their villages.
Having said that, I don't have a problem with limited hunting of whales that are not endangered and from what I see, that is what is happening now. I do see this as the slippery slope in which the three nations will push to increase the numbers as time goes on. Further, what will happen in 10 years?
So, now, Obama has thrown the environmentalists under the bus for, how many times now? But he also doesn't care. Who will the environmentalists vote for in 2012? Obama or the Green Party? Chances are they will vote for Obama.
