ESPN NASCAR Analyst Suspended For Drug Use

"NASCAR on Tuesday suspended former driver Randy LaJoie for failing a drug test, and he said he's enrolled in a substance-abuse program...In an interview Tuesday on SIRIUS XM Radio, Lajoie said he has also been suspended from his role as a NASCAR analyst with ESPN.
ESPN confirmed Lajoie had been indefinitely suspended".

Ok, I understand that LaJoie may have smoked pot once, according to him. But is he a danger to the NASCAR drivers if he is not a driver or on the track as a crew member? I imagine he was suspended from ESPN for publicity reasons.
Apparently LaJoie was apparently applying for a job as a spotter for the Joe Gibbs racing team and that is why he was tested. Of course, if he knew he was being tested, why did he even smoke the pot. Or apply for the job.
I'm sorry but the punishment, to me, just doesn't fit the crime, unless LaJoie is lying. He states he smoked pot just once in May. If that is true, then I feel the punishment doesn't fit the crime. However, he also may be lying, so who knows what is the truth.
Having never smoked pot (seriously, I am one of the few who never smoked pot in the 1970's and 80's or at any time), I really don't know how pot affects one's brain. So, is the suspension from NASCAR and ESPN justified?
