What's Up With KDWN's Sunday Night Programming

I was coming back from the dog park, channel surfing and turned to KDWN in the 9:00 PM hour. I turned to KDWN and they had a shown, a very conservative show about illegal immigration. The show was so old, Tom Daschle and President Bush were still in office. It was like going back in time, which wasn't to comfortable since I saw the trilogy of "Back To The Future" this weekend. Daschle left office in 2004 so the show had to have aired well before then.
And yes, people were still pissed off about illegals then, just as they are now.
So, why is KDWN airing stuff that old?

  1. Maybe they're trying to show how little things have changed in the past decade or so. This is a perennial issue that neither side truly wants to address, in part because each side wants to keep it as a wedge issue, and in part because each side is actually a coalition of competing interests.

On the conservative/Republican side, you have law-and-order and working class folks who want to close our porous borders, as well as wealthy corporate fatcats (including agribusiness) who want to keep their supply of cheap labor.

On the liberal/Democratic side, you have Hispanic groups and social justice folks who want to help immigrants stay in this country and thrive, as well as labor unions who resent the downward pressure on wages that immigration causes.

That is why nothing has been done in decades on this issue. Neither party can afford to piss off half of their base. They make a show of doing something about it, but every bill that is introduced is either killed in committee or watered-down until it is meaningless.
