Prominent Pot Smoker Dies Of Lung Cancer

Ben Masel is a prominent pot smoker and pot activist who lives in Madison, WI. I have had some debates through newspapers and blogs about pot smoker.
Well, Masel died today of lung cancer. I am sorry that he died, but the fact that he died of lung cancer kind of says that maybe pot smoker.
From the Wisconsin State Journal: Ben Masel, prominent marijuana activist and professional rabble rouser, died Saturday from complications due to lung cancer. He was 56.
Diagnosed in January, Masel had recently made it through 25 radiation treatments for the disease, but was too weak to face chemotherapy. He died just before 9 a.m., surrounded by family at a nearby hospice center.
"He made a point of living at the front lines and fighting for his rights," said Semilla Anderson, Masel's daughter. "He will be remembered for that."
Masel was born in the Bronx and grew up in New Jersey. He moved to Madison in 1971 and quickly became a fixture of the counter-culture, known specifically for acts of civil disobedience in the cause of legalizing pot. http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/article_68fbe4a4-7385-11e0-b755-001cc4c002e0.html

I'm sorry that Masel had to go through the pain of cancer and I wish his family well. But, when it comes to pot and the dangers of smoking pot, he kind of made the point that pot is dangerous and can cause lung cancer, among other problems.

  1. It is very offensive for you to make this outrageous claim that something this man fought his whole life for is responsible for killing him. Marijuana does not cause lung cancer. In fact, according to a study by Harvard, marijuana use cuts lung cancer tumor growth by 50%.

Educate yourself on the subject before you post offensive, uneducated commentary on the internet. R.I.P. Ben

  3. As another 420 comes and goes. I'm amazed that the number of people who still believe that smoking marijuana is beneficial. Any time that you introduce something foreign to your body you are going to have repercussions. Every study in the world can't mask the fact that this man died of lung cancer. And he died at a young age. So what would be the other cause of his death? Cigarettes have been proven years ago to cause lung cancer but inhaling a joint and holding it for as long as you can is beneficial? You're still injesting smoke into your lungs and you're holding it longer than you hold cigarette smoke. Let's do this....if it's totally safe but still illegal, would you sign a waiver that permits you to smoke freely without being arrested but in return would sign a waiver stating that if you contract something such as lung cancer that you waive your rights to all medical attention? Well, you just said that it doesn't cause lung cancer, right? Here's your chance to smoke it freely and hold your claim....But if by chance you contract something that is related to MJ that you will not be allowed medical attention unless you pay for it completely on your own. That's fair, isn't it?
