CCSD School Board Trustee: Laid Off Teachers To Become Homeless

As part of my daughter's extra credit project, she was required to watch "Education Matters", a TV show on PBS that is the propaganda piece for the CCSD school board and district. On the show tonight was Lorraine Alderman, the trustee from District D, along with other guests. When asked about the layoffs, she said that teacher who are laid off will lose their houses and some will be forced to live on the street. Really? lose their homes and become homeless? First, if there are teacher layoffs, most of the teachers being laid off are teachers who have worked for the district for 2 or three years of less. There may be a few exceptions, but not many. Those teachers probably don't own a house yet, as many are just starting in teaching and don't have the money to buy a house. And teachers becoming homeless? Please, if a teacher does lose their job, they will still be paid a salary until August of this year and then if they don't find a job by then, then they will receive unemployment compensation for year or more. Not too many teachers will be living on the streets, unless there are other circumstances in play. Also, when Alderman and another guest, Trustee Chris Garvey of District B both stated that they would not encourage people to move and live in Las Vegas if they have children because of the poor education their kids would receive in CCSD. Well, Trustee Garvey and Alderman, why don't we just close up the District and let the private schools take over? Why even try? Yes, things will be difficult, no doubt about that. But if a kid is interested in getting an education, goes to school every day, doesn't skip classes and stays out of trouble, they will receive a good education. Will it be easy. No. But can it be done? Of course. The majority of students in CCSD will receive a good education. Will there be more drop outs? Perhaps, but it won't be because of CCSD, it will be the fault of the student and their family. So, CCSD would be more credible to the public and it's employees if the leaders and Trustees would not be such drama queens. It's not professional and that is what will cause moral problems.
