I've been listening to the radio and several stations are playing advertisements soliciting people to donate money to the Red Cross. They start off by talking about the earthquakes in Japan and Christchurch, New Zealand. it then asks you to text a certain number and you just donated $10 to the Red Cross.
However, the Red Cross never says the money is going to Japan or New Zealand or any other disaster. It just says the money is going to the Red Cross.
The Red Cross provides some really good services- blood donations, helping out in fires, disasters and other services.
They also have some high priced employees. In 2010, the head of the Red Cross made about $500,000

So, donate if you wish, but just keep in mind, there is no guarantee that the money they get from the text messages will get to the earthquake victims in New Zealand and Japan.
Please make sure the charity you donate is legitimate and does what they say they are going to do.
