The Las Vegas Sun is not really a newspaper. It's an advocacy newsletter for liberal causes with the occassional local news story. When it comes to elections, the Sun whores for the most liberal candidate, not matter what how bad the candidate is and they misrepresent the liberal's position for the better and tries to destroy the conservative candidate with lies and inuendos.
In the race for mayor of the City of Las Vegas, there are two females running, Carolyn Goodman, wife of present mayor, Oscar Goodman, who the Sun despises and Chris Giunchigliani who is a very liberal Clark County Commissioner.
Yesterday, the Sun ran a puff piece on Giunchigliani and her issues. Of course they failed to mention how much money Giunchigliani has wasted on Clark County employee contracts, especially the contracts with the Clark County fire department. She was a johnny come lately to the CCFD overtime debacle in which firefighters were paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in overtime in very suspicious circumstances. The Sun never held her accountable for that.
Sun comes out with an attack piece on Goodman and publishes a dubious poll showing Giunchigliani is in a close race with Goodman. Remember Jon Ralston writing about phantom polls in the Reid-Angle race?
The Sun also rips on Goodman for an appearence with some members of the gay community. Apparently the Sun wants her to pander to this special interest group like Giunchigliani.
From the Sun: Is the tide turning for Carolyn Goodman?
Goodman has been the front-runner in the Las Vegas mayoral race since she announced her candidacy in February. But a poll released Tuesday showed her in a dead heat with opponent Chris Giunchigliani.
Giunchigliani trailed Goodman by only 2 percentage points, according to the poll conducted earlier this month by the Beneson Strategy Group.
The survey showed Goodman receiving 45 percent of the vote and Giunchigliani receiving 43 percent. Goodman enjoyed a 20-point lead after last month's primary.
The Goodman campaign questioned the accuracy of the poll and the size of the sample. Giunchigliani's campaign pointed out that the Beneson Group accurately predicted the results of the primary, within the margin of error.
The poll was first reported by Las Vegas Sun columnist Jon Ralston moments after Goodman finished speaking at a luncheon for members of Lambda, Las Vegas' gay, lesbian and transgender chamber of commerce.
The Goodman campaign released its own poll Tuesday in response to the Giunchigliani poll. It showed Goodman leading Guinchigliani 53-31, with about 16 percent of voters undecided. That poll was conducted by Magellan Research and surveyed a group three times larger than Guinchigliani's did. http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2011/may/11/poll-shows-tight-mayoral-race-carolyn-goodman-stum/
And when you go to the article, look at the pictures. The picture for Goodman shows her flailing around while talking and the picture of Giunchigliani shows a thoughtful and quiet candidate. Talk about the Sun whoring for Giunchigliani.
Later in the article: Goodman also received a less-than-favorable reaction when she described people as "transvestites" rather than "transgender." Several people gasped.
Moderator Steve Friess, a freelance writer and blogger, tried several times to push Goodman to answer questions definitively. He didn't have much luck.
Goodman could not say which government departments she would eliminate or consolidate. She previously has advocated for smaller government.
"I can't tell you that," she said. "I'm not in the city (government)."
When asked what LGBT events she has participated in since the primary, Goodman said: "I can't give you specifics since I didn't have the question ahead of time."
Mayer said afterward that Goodman participated in an event with Frank Marino, a Las Vegas female impersonator, and attended a fundraiser her neighbors hosted for her and several members of the gay community.
Who cares what events Goodman has been to. As a candidate, she has been to many forums and she probably doesn't remember them all. And if she didn't attend any gay events, so what? What does that prove, that she hates gays? Of course not. Maybe she doesn't pander to special interest groups like her opponent.
I don't have a dog in the race. I live in Henderson, so I don't have a vote. But I find it interesting to watch the Las Vegas Sun, especially Delen Goldberg hump the hell out of Giunchigliani while the Sun whore for her in their news articles.

Dan, you are a whore for wealthy capitalist corporate social Darwinists.
ReplyDeleteBeyond that, the Sun is just reporting the facts. Do they tell them the way you see them? No, we have the RJ to tell us your perspective.
Clearly Goodman should be able to tell where she has been for the past month. She was trying to pander, but couldn't even do it effectively. She hasn't and can't answer one question substantively.
Giunchigliani? You can't blame her for the actions of firefighters. If they would have raped someone, would that have been her fault too? Get over it! I bet you didn't blame Republican deregulation for Enron. Hypocrite.
Another thing, Giunchigliani should get credit for maintaining Nevada as essentially the lowest taxed state in the nation for 16 years.

ReplyDeleteNicest thing someone has said about me in a long time.
I am mostly commenting on the coverage of the race. As I had said before, I don't have a dog in this race,so i reallyu don't care. Whoever Las Vegas votes in is fine with me because it won't affect me.
But the way the Sun is covering the race is purely political and no they aren't reporting all the facts.
