North Las Vegas is a city that is next to the City of Las Vegas and it's demographics range from the poorest of the poor in Clark County to upscale neighborhoods that would rival Summerlin, Henderson and other up scale neighborhoods in Clark County.
However, the City of North Las Vegas seems to be imploding.
The other day, they said they were going cut about 4o firefighter positions. Today, the city announced they are going to lay off morecity employees. From the Las Vegas Sun: The City of North Las Vegas plans to begin sending pink slips Monday to cut 83 positions in the police department, officials announced Wednesday.
The positions were slated for reduction in the fiscal 2012 budget approved May 17 by the City Council. The cash-strapped city could lay off more than 250 employees as it tries to plug a $30.3 million budget shortfall next year.
About $9.2 million will be saved from the police department layoffs, which include the following union positions: 17 police officers, three police supervisors, 21 detention officers and two detention supervisors.
Other positions in the police department slated for elimination include 36.5 Teamsters and 3.5 temporary positions. Some of the positions being eliminated already are vacant.
The final number of layoffs could be reduced if city and union leaders agree on additional union concessions, officials said.

In addition, North Las Vegas is facing a costly law suit involving Clark County over the new waste water treatment that is located just south of Nellis Air Force Base. The treatment plant cost about $200,000,000 to build but there is a possibility it may be shut down. The City wants to use a flood water control channel/creek to send the water down to Lake Mead, but they don't have the permission from Clark County to use the channel. North Las Vegas wants to send 20 million gallons a day down the channel but Clark County says no. North Las Vegas started to use the chanel without permission last week from the County and now it is the courts.
North Las Vegas is send effluent, or treated waste water down the creek, so it is possible to see some little pieces of poo come down the creek. Of course the correct solution would be is North Las Vegas stock the creek with fish and open up areas for fishing. But, this court battle is going to cost North Las Vegas thousands and it may result in them shutting down the waste water treatment plant.
So, what is going in North Las Vegas? One reason is that like most government employees, they have highly paid government workers. They also lost a contract with the Fed's to house federal prisoners at their jail. Maybe they can contract with California to house some of their prisoners California is going to let out of prison early.
But it seems like North Las Vegas is imploding from mismanagement by it's administrators, falling tax revenues, some greed by it's employees and the severe poverty that is seen in the City.
Hopefully the City can turn it around before North Las Vegas becomes another Detroit.
