Today, the Moulin Rouge was torn down. The Moulin Rouge was the first integrated casino in Las Vegas and many of the stars in the mid 50's's played or stayed there. It was open only for 6 months.
From the Las Vegas Sun: "Workers on Thursday demolished the tower of the first racially integrated casino in Las Vegas, one day after city officials turned down an appeal of its owners' demolition permit.
The white tower of the Moulin Rouge hotel-casino, which opened in 1955 and played host to headliners including Sammy Davis Jr., Nat "King" Cole and Frank Sinatra, was pulled down by cables after initial attempts failed and the structure resisted." http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/jul/22/historic-moulin-rouge-tower-demolished-in-vegas/#comments
However, the Moulin Rouge was only open for 6 months and the rest of the time it remained a blight in the near west Las Vegas. Squatters moved in and there have been numerous fires at the place, the last one was last year.
Some people wanted to keep the building as it was of historic importance. It was important but not that important. While the Moulin Rouge was the first casino to integrate, but I am quite sure another casino would have been the integrated within a few months or so.
If the people who love the Moulin Rouge, honor it with a monument, plaque or something like that. Don't honor it with old decrepit buildings that are burned out. Let the new owners develop the site so it is not blighted and allow a tribute to the Moulin Rouge stand on the corner to show the historic significance of the site.
So, good bye, Moulin Rouge. Glad to see you go, you did good but it's time to move on. I hope another project opens up that will provide jobs to the community.

Don't bet the farm on the lib vs. con IQs. You may not like Al Franken, but he did graduate cum laude with a BA in poli sci from Harvard. I don't know from where Sharron Angle graduated, but she hasn't come off as an Einstein. Just sayin'. . .
