How's that stimulus plan working for Las Vegas? Considering that the unemployment rate was not suppose to go above 8%, according to our dear Las Vegas leaders of Harry, Dina and Shelly. I guess that was another lie among all the lies the Democrats have told us.
From the Las Vegas Sun: "The unemployment rate in Nevada hit another high in June and the number of jobless in the Las Vegas area continued to climb.
The state Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation estimated the June statewide rate at 14.2 percent with an estimated 193,300 people jobless. It outpaced the national average of 9.5 percent, which fell from 9.7 percent in May.
The statewide unemployment rate was 13.8 percent in May.
In the Las Vegas area, the unemployment rate jumped to 14.5 percent, the highest of the state’s three metropolitan areas. There were an estimated 141,500 persons out of work in June compared to 138,000 in May."

Actually, the unemployment rate is much higher, probably close to 20% as people have dropped out looking for jobs and they are not being counted.
Showing that Harry Reid really has no clue, he said this: "Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid responded to the jobless numbers this morning, saying “the efforts of this Congress have kept a bad situation from becoming worse,” but more work needed to be done.
“It took many years to dig us into this hole and we’re not going to get out of it overnight,” Reid said in a statement. “It’s why we passed Wall Street Reform, why we’re working on the small business jobs bill and why we’re going to extend unemployment insurance. We have a lot of work to do to restore Nevada’s economic vitality, but Nevadans are fighters and I will continue fighting with them until every Nevadan who wants a job has one.”
First, Harry, Wall Street has little to do with the unemployment rate in Nevada. It has nothing to do with layoffs at the casinos, loss of construction work or private sector jobs. However the private sector is not hiring because they are afraid of what is going to happen with Obama Care, Cap and Trade, the demonizing of the private sector, the raising of the minimum (a Nevada issue) and over regulation. The Wall Street Reform Act will not get us more jobs in Nevada.
Second, companies are not getting credit to borrow and expand- banks are not lending because they are afraid of what may happen.
Sen. Reid, your policies have contributed to the job loss. The closing of automobile dealerships, closing down Yucca, shutting down the power plants up north, Obama's statements regarding travel to Las Vegas, lack of immigration enforcement (when was the last time you heard of an ICE raid in Las Vegas), the raising and the promise of raising taxes, out of control spending, the passing of laws and regulations that are scaring the hell out of private businesses and so forth.
You are a major problem with the unemployment in Las Vegas, Harry Reid and you still have not come up with a good solution with solving the problem. For instance, lower the corporate income tax, a freeze in collecting income tax for everyone, repeal all tax increases the Democrats have passed and repeal Obama Care. Do that and you actually may help the economy of Las Vegas.
But in the meantime, Harry, I am sure you will be saying this today:

Unemployment sucks. The economy sucks. And it has for a while. I don't know that we can lay it all at Harry's feet, or that things would be different with someone else in there.
ReplyDeleteThe economy started effecting my business in late 2007. In mid- '08 we had our hours cut, and they STILL are. I suspect that even if the economy were to really start bouncing back that all these companies that have cut hours and jobs will continue to try to get along with less people and less hours for as long as they can. Recovery will be hard to measure until they can't get away with that anymore. Let's hope we get there.
I do agree with you, for the most part. It's not all Harry's fault or the Dem's fault. Part of it is Bush's fault and in the Valley, we just over built and it's going to take a long time before home construction returns to anything close to normal.

ReplyDeleteFortunately, for us one solution is moving through the U.S. Senate. The program, known as HOME STAR, would provide people with incentives to make energy efficient upgrades to their homes, reducing their energy bills by 20 – 50 percent. It would get the assembly lines moving in our manufacturing plants and put tens of thousands of U.S. construction workers back to work. The standards in Home Star are national standards our company supports and the building performance industry in Nevada is already invested in.
As a small business owner, I know this bill will increase my business, allowing me to increase my workforce. This bill does more than help me and construction workers, though. It helps our families, and all local businesses dependent on consumers to use their services and buy their goods.
I ask Senators Reid and Ensign to vote in favor of the HOME STAR legislation. But a yes vote is not enough. The construction industry in Nevada needs more than a yes vote, we need Senate leadership. We should all call on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to immediately bring HOME STAR to the Senate floor this week as part of the Small Business Jobs bill. Nevada should be able to count on its Senators’ leadership positions in the U.S. Senate. Passage of this bill will make a significant improvement to Nevada’s economy.
