From The El Paso Times: "The man who said he stoically let his friends set him on fire when he lost a drinking contest may be charged with lying to police.
In fact, the 47-year-old man might have set himself on fire with a crack pipe, according to new information provided Friday by a witness.
Las Cruces police found the man naked on the side of U.S. 70 last week, suffering burns over a third of his body, including his prosthetic leg. He initially told police his friends set him on fire after he "only" drank a six-pack of beer in a bet.
The witness who came forward Friday said the man ended up on the highway bridge after catching a ride with someone into town, ostensibly to a girlfriend's house, said Doña Ana County sheriff's investigator Bo Nevarez, who was assigned to the case Thursday."
