Metro, Err, Taxpayers Pay $120,000 To Man Involved In Crash That Killed Officer

From the LVRJ: "The Metropolitan Police Department has agreed to pay $120,000 to Calvin Darling, who was accused of drunken driving after last year's fatal crash with a speeding Las Vegas police cruiser.
The settlement must be approved Monday morning by the agency's Fiscal Affairs Committee to become official. Neither the Police Department nor Darling's lawyer would discuss the proposed settlement until it is approved.
Darling's claim against the police stems from a May 7, 2009, crash on Flamingo Road near Tenaya Way."
This involved the case where Officer James Manor, while responding a reported domestic violence call, was traveling westbound on Flamingo and hit Darling's car when Darling's car turned in front of it. Manor was believed to be traveling over 100 mph. Darling tried to help the officer after the accident.
Metro then arrested Darling, accused him of driving drunk. His BAC was .035, way under the DUI limit and he was released from jail the next day. Metro issued an apology, of sorts to Darling.
$120,000 seems about right for the false arrest, damage to his reputation and for totalling his truck. He probably would have gotten more if he went to trial but Darling, seems like a nice enough fellow and he didn't want the trial or the publicity.
There are two problems I have with this. The call Manor and other officers was a false call. The call was a domestic violence call but the call was made up by a juvenile. Why isn't the family of the juvenile made to pay the $120,000 or at least some of it? Why wasn't the juvenile arrested for making the false call.
Second, the LVRJ keeps saying Metro is going to pay this amount. No, taxpayers are going to pay this $120,000.
Hopefully, this will end a sad chapter in Metro's history. We lost a good officer, tarnished a man's image and had to pay out $120,000 plus the cost of the officer's medical care and funeral. All for a false call.
