You really have to give it to the Las Vegas Sun. They can take an article on the recession abuse of women and completely make an ass of themselves.
Stephanie Tavares writes an article about how bad women have in the current recession. I will give her credit that she did not mention Harry Reid once in the article. That's about the least biased the Las Vegas Sun has been lately. But she turns this into a male bashing session.
Anyways, Ms. Tavares says this: "Peggy is one of tens of thousands of women in the United States who have fled abusive relationships since the recession began.
National studies have long shown that economic hardship is a leading factor in domestic violence and that abuse increases in recessions.
The problem has grown so widespread amid the Great Recession, that even the United Nations has addressed it.
In a September 2009 address on the struggling world economy, U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro cited a U.N. survey that found a 75 percent increase in demand for services at American shelters for battered women in 2008 over 2007 levels.
“We have seen rising levels of despair and frustration in families and communities around the world, exacerbating violence against women,” she said.
A Justice Department study in March found that the persistent unemployment and high rates of foreclosures unique to this recession have made family stresses particularly high, resulting in increased incidents of domestic violence." http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/jul/19/battered-women-recession/#comments
First, women have fled abusive situations when the economy is good or bad. Second, what is the U.N. survey Ms. Tavares cites as the 75% increase in demand for services from American shelters? But Ms. Tavares cites this: "And many abuse victims are turning to shelters such as Shade Tree."
"In 2007, the shelter provided 73,000 “bed nights” for women and their children, says Marlene Richter, Shade Tree’s executive director. In 2008 the tally jumped to 98,000 bed nights. Last year it was more than 100,000. And the numbers have not gone down this year, she says."
Not exactly a 75% increase in shelter experiences and Clark County is in the heart of the foreclousre and unemployment crisis in the United States.
Of course, Ms. Tarves does not mention that women may have also fared better in the recession. From Reuters: "Women fared much better than men during the recent downturn, reflecting structural changes in the U.S. economy that make a fast jobs recovery unlikely, according to a Federal Reserve Bank of New York study released on Tuesday.
The unemployment gender gap hit a post-war peak in August 2009, when the jobless rate for men was 11 percent and that for women was 8.3 percent, the study showed. Although the gap has since come off that peak, it remains at a historically high level.
The study authors -- Aysegul Sahin, Joseph Song and Bart Hobijn -- said the gender gap apparently reflects occurred because many of the jobs lost were in male-dominated manufacturing and construction industries.
Also, there was an increase in the percentage of men who reentered the labor market -- perhaps due to a decline in household wealth and savings -- but failed to find a job, they wrote.
Industries that did better during the current recession "

I guess that doesn't fit the liberal template.
More crap from Tavares: "And domestic violence arrests rose 25 percent from 2005 to 2009, according to Metro Police." And what is the break down? Are there more women being arrested or is it just males? Domestic violence may also be siblings fighting or a parent battering a child. It also may mean a adult is battering another adult such as mother, brother or sister, father, child or roommate.
I am not going to sugar coat it. Anyone who batters a woman or a woman batter a man are scum. There is no excuse for it. None whatsoever.
However, just as it has been disproven that women have been abused more often on Super Bowl Sunday, this story by Ms. Tavares will also be disproven.
The fact is women are doing better in this recession than males and the statistics that Tavares wrote that allegedly shows women are seeking more 75% shelter care because of women being battered is also false.
But this is the liberal template: Women, kids and minorities are always the worst hit and the white males never suffer.
It's just false and it doesn't help anyone. Everyone in this recession is being hurt: males, females, black, white, Hispanics, Asian etc, pets. Yes there is abuse going on but abuse has been going on since day one, since at least Cain and Able. It's sad, pathetic and uncalled for, no matter what the excuse is.
And when women are being abused, they need to leave the relationship immediately and seek help from Shade Tree and other social service organizations and they need to call the police and prosecute the thugs who had hurt them.
Domestic violence is horrible and cannot be tolerated, but stop hyper-inflating numbers and making false assumptions and you may actually be taken seriously.
Trump is down to his last 4 rallies.
