The Salvation Army is a world wide organization that has responded to the New Zealand earthquake in Christchurch.
I realize that many organizations are helping out in Christchurch, including the Red Cross.
I have worked at a Salvation army homeless shelter in Wausau, WI. and learned a lot of the Salvation army, including the fact that very little money the Salvation army raises goes for salaries and benefits, unlike the Red Cross, which pays it's higher level employees quite a lot more than more than the Salvation Army. http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Employer=American_Red_Cross/Salary
The executive director of the Red Cross made $651,000+ for a year, while the head of the Salvation Army made $13,000. http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_charities_salaries.htm
So, if you give to a charity, please consider the Salvation Army.
