The summit of Mauna Kea is chilly year round, due to the high altitude, and the proximity of the ocean provides a steady source of moisture, so Hawaii can have "winter weather" in any month. From http://www.gohawaii.com/big-island/about/weather: "You can travel through all but two of the world’s different climate zones on Hawaii ranging from Wet Tropical to Polar Tundra, a result of the shielding effect and elevations of the massive volcanoes Maunakea and Maunaloa"
