2 Hutterite Volunteer Firefighters Killed In South Dakota

From the Aberdeen, SD, News.Com: Two Sunset Colony volunteer firefighters are dead and one was injured after an explosion today at the Hutterite colony about 7 miles northwest of Britton.
The firefighters, ages 20 and 21, were on top of a structure putting out a fire when an explosion blew off the top and the south wall of the building, killing both men, Marshall County Sheriff Dale Elsen said this afternoon.
Elsen told American News reporter Samantha Norman that the first call came in to 911 at 9:51 a.m. A caller said he noticed smoke coming from one of the coal bins at the colony about 8 a.m. today.
Several volunteer firefighters fought the blaze, and thought the fire had been extinguished when the explosion occurred, Elsen said.
The injured man was the father of one of the victims, Elsen said. The man was taken to Marshall County Health Care Center, he said.

I am kind of surprised that a Hutterite Colony had their own fire department.
For those who do not know, Hutterites are similar to the Amish in the way they dress and their religious beliefs.
However, they live in Colonies or communes and work a large farm. They raise crops and animals and they grow their own food and butcher their own animals. Kind of like a collective farm that the hippies in the 1970's wanted to live on.
When I lived in North Dakota and Montana, I got to know several people who lived in Hutterite colonies. Most colonies are rich. Almost super rich. The would go down to the farm implement store and by a $300,000 combine in cash. The colony I was most familiar with in Montana depended on the local fire department and they also wanted some of their children to attend public school. Well, actually, they wanted the public schools to build a school in the Colony and staff it.
So, again, I am kind of surprised the Hutterites had a fire department, but once again it shows that no matter what religion you are and where you live, firefighting is dangerous and can be deadly.
