To start, I am pro life, though if a mother's physical life is in danger, I would understand the need for an abortion. Also, if a woman is raped- I would certainly wish she would bring the baby to life, if the woman chose to have an abortion, I wouldn't hold that against her.
But I also think some people are just to extreme. From the Las Vegas Sun: A court challenge is being mounted to block an anti-abortion Nevada ballot initiative that would change the state constitution to define life as beginning at conception, and demand civil rights for unborn children.

While technically, they maybe right that unborn child should be given civil rights, that goes to far. For instance, if you give an unborn baby civil rights, can they sue their mom if she drinks or smokes while pregnant? Can the unborn baby sue if the baby is taken out for stupid reasons, like being the first New Year's baby? Can a unborn baby sue because they don't like who their parents are, like if their mom is a member of the Dance Mom's cast?
Abortions are declining across the U.S. and that is very good but more can be done. But stupid legislative ballot initiatives make most legitimate pro life people looking stupid.

I must disagree. While I agree you are correct in saying some extremes in the prolife community seem to take it too far, this is not the reason those organizations are sometimes not taken seriously. Extremists exist on all sides. The reason they might not be taken seriously is because a money-swimming Planned Parenthood and a liberal media join to paint all pro-lifers as extremists. In that way, they get the support of many who think the issue is woman's "freedom" and nothing else. Take for example when Susan B. Komen cut funding to Planned Parenthood: nobody understood that it was simply getting rid of the middle-man and saving money (PP didn't actually provide breast screenings, but farms them out, it is better for donors if the money goes straight to actual providers instead of PP) Instead there was a big outcry and some famous people/bands publicly cut their donations to Komen in uninformed 'outrage'. Or maybe informed (but reasons implied were BS): planned parenthood does decrease the world population, so Bill Gates loves them. Either way, what we heard was all a big fat lie about Komen doing it because of a "Crazy pro-lifer" who worked for them. Thus continuing this idea that Pro-lifers are extremists and crazy.
ReplyDeleteI also must note that saying the unborn baby can sue for Mommy's smoking is the same as saying the 2-year-old can sue for the same. Giving an unborn the rights of a citizen would be for one purpose: make the common man think about the unseen baby as a real baby instead of a lump of flesh that miraculously turns into a baby upon live delivery. We would still give the babe the rights we'd give a two year old :)
