From The LVRJ: School police used hidden cameras to catch a teacher's aide roughly handling two special needs students in their classroom, according to a report released Wednesday.
Lachelle James, also known as Lachelle or Michelle McCraney, was arrested Tuesday on five counts of child abuse and one count of battery after the Clark County School District detectives watched her on hidden cameras.
James, 28, is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center.
Her arrest report details what officers witnessed in the classroom at the Variety School for the handicapped.
Late Friday night, detectives installed hidden surveillance cameras in James' classroom after they heard allegations that the aide was abusing a student. The student and others in the classroom are described in the report as "non-verbal" and lacking the ability to speak or write.
Detectives watched the video and did not see the first student being abused, but they did witness James' interactions with two other students.

Just FYI, I am a special education teacher in CCSD and work with kids like those in the classroom where the aide worked.
So, the CCSD cops (The school district has their own police department) think there is abuse going on in the classroom, so they set up cameras to catch abuse that is supposed to happen.
Then on Monday, the SPTA (teacher's aide) abuses a student. Could this abuse of the student been avoided?
First, the school could have handled the situation administratively by removing the SPTA from her position and possibly suspended the SPTA. This would have avoided the abuse by the SPTA on Tuesday.
If there were allegations of abuse, they could have suspended the aide with pay while they investigated the allegations and this would have prevented the abuse of a student on Tuesday.
Teachers and staff at schools are mandated reporters of abuse and if they suspected abuse, they (the administrators) should have documented the allegations and decide whether abuse could have happened or not and send the case to the CCSDPD and dealt with the SPTA immediately. Variety doesn't have any cops assigned to the school, so they had to use another school's cops and the detectives in the District. If they handled the case in house and also brought in the cops, the abuse on Tuesday would have been avoided.
So, this past Tuesday, a student was allegedly abuse by a SPTA but the abuse could have been avoided had the cops and administration acted responsibly and got the SPTA out of the classroom and an investigated started. They may not have gotten her arrested for abuse, but then again, the abuse never would have happened if the SPTA was taken out of the classroom and a proper investigation had taken place.
If I was the parent of the child who was abused, I'd be getting an attorney about now and sued the district for allowing the abuse to take place.
The other issue is where the teacher was while the abuse was taking place. By law, a teacher has to be in the classroom whenever the students are in the classroom- a SPTA cannot be left alone in the classroom. This rule is routinely broken by necessity, more than anything else.
So, where was the teacher and is the District throwing the SPTA under the bus while the classroom teacher is given a break.
This is a sad case for all involved- the student, their family, the school, even the supposed abuser. I realize that I am an almost Thursday morning quarterback but I think if the CCSDPD and the administration at Variety School handled this situation better, a student would not have been abused on Tuesday and the supposed abuser would not be in the classroom and the investigation would be under way to determine if any abuse had actually happened.

Dan I agree with you regarding where was the teacher and why would they allow it a child to be abuse just to get video. I to work for CCSD I think it's time to clean house at Variety and made sure they have the right type of teacher and SPTA who are able to handle special need students. It's sad because this have not been the 1st case of abuse at Variety and if they keep the same people with the same way of thinking it will not be the the last.
