How Sad

From the LVRJ: A missing 64-year-old hiker was found dead Thursday morning after an apparent fall into a ravine, Henderson police said.
James Klever was discovered about 10:30 a.m. at the bottom of the ravine on Black Mountain. Authorities had been searching for him since Wednesday evening when he failed to return home from a hike, police said.
Klever left his home at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and when he had not returned by 7 p.m., his wife contacted police. Klever's vehicle was found on Pancho Via Drive near Horizon Ridge, a desert area that leads up to Black Mountain trails, police said. He was found about a half mile from his car.
Henderson officers and members of the Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue team scoured the area Wednesday and early Thursday.

Umm, no, they did not scour the mountain and the area.  The rescue helicopter started flying around the mountain around 1:30 AM.  I know this because we live across the street from the mountain..
And scouring the mountain?  Nope.  They didn't take any vehicles up the mountain and I didn't see anyone walking around the mountain with a flashlight.  It may not have made a difference, but Metro and Henderson police kind of exaggerated their actions last night.
So, why was Mr. Klever up on Black Mountain at night and alone?  The main reason is because this is the best view of the Las Vegas Valley.  You can easily see the Strip, downtown, Boulder Highway, Red Rock, Mount Charleston and all the surrounding areas of the Valley and beyond.  At night it is a very beautiful sight, with all the lighting Las Vegas has.  So, if you are going to go, this area is probably the most beautiful area in the Las Vegas area.
RIP, Mr. Klever.

  1. My husband, James Klever, was not at Black Mountain at night. He was there during the day, and yes, the police did scour the mountain, though you may not have seen them because they did not spot his car at his usual trail head so, sadly, they did not find him until the next morning when they did find the car, parked in a slightly more hidden spot. The comment about the area being a great place to see Las Vegas at night is right on, but again, James went out at 11 AM and was supposed to return home at 2:30. He never stayed longer than he said he would, which is why I became suspicious when he did not return at the time he said he would. I called the police and they were wonderful. They went out immediately and an officer sat with me late into the evening. It was too dark to search further that day and the S&R helicopter was out for repairs. They went back immediately the next morning and found him.
