Interesting story about corruption in Cook County, home to President Obama: A former south suburban police chief is expected to plead guilty to diverting hundreds of thousands of dollars from a state job-training grant to friends and family, her attorney said Tuesday as more charges were filed in the case.
Regina Evans, a former Chicago police lieutenant and Country Club Hills chief, has been in custody since mid-March, when authorities charged her with trying to coax an associate into lying to the grand jury.
"She is planning on accepting responsibility for what she did. She wants to put this behind her," said Evans' attorney, Lawrence Beaumont. "She is a good person. She spent a lot of years working for the community."
The state grant at issue came to Evans' nonprofit We Are Our Brothers Keeper while she was police chief and after she and her husband had spent several years running entertainment and transportation businesses in the south suburbs.
The $1.25 million was supposed to be used to train dozens of minorities and women for good-paying construction jobs.
But soon the state started asking questions about where the money was going. Last year the federal government leveled fraud charges against Evans and her husband, Ronald, after they had left their jobs in Country Club Hills. Ronald Evans was inspector general of the suburb.
Prosecutors say the Evanses used about $500,000 from the grant to pay friends and relatives and to cover the mortgage on the landmark New Regal Theater on Chicago's South Side, a venue they were trying to rehab.
In April, prosecutors charged Regina Evans' friend Jeri Wright and accused her of helping Evans to convert cash from the grant to personal use through paychecks. Wright is the daughter of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., President Barack Obama's former pastor. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/ct-met-country-clubs-hills-charges-20130612,0,353096.story
Hell, even the run of the mill scandals in the Chicago area has close ties to Obama.
