James Bulah Update

Here is an update on James Bulah, the homeowner who shot two thugs who were stealing from his truck.
From the Las Vegas Sun: Arrest reports were released today for one of the alleged thieves and for the homeowner who had the gun. The report indicates the two men were driving around while looking for items to steal.
James Bulah, 60, told police he heard noises outside his home in the 4500 block of Shannon Jean Court, which is near the intersection of Craig Road and Fifth St. at 5:49 a.m. Sunday and came out with a gun, firing at two men as they fled in their truck.
Both men were struck by gunfire before crashing into the brick wall less than a block away.
On Wednesday, Arturo Namez, 36, was jailed on one felony count of burglary to a motor vehicle and one gross misdemeanor count of possession of burglary tools after being released from University Medical Center, where he was taken after the shooting.
According to a North Las Vegas Police arrest report, an officer responded to UMC to interview Namez, where he was recovering from surgery. After being read his rights, he agreed to speak with the officer, the report said....In his interview with police, Namez said that before going to Bulah’s home, they had stolen a generator. A generator and a pair of bolt cutters were recovered from the wrecked truck, the report stated....Bulah’s wife told police their home had been broken into in the past and items have been stolen from their truck. She said they owned a rifle because their home kept getting broken into, the report stated.
Shortly before the shooting, the couple were asleep. They heard a noise and Bulah got up to investigate, she told police. She said she ran to the door and saw Bulah, who was outside, fire two shots, she told police. He came back inside the home and told his wife he thought he shot them, the report said.
Bulah told police he heard the noises outside his house, so he went to investigate. He grabbed his gun and went outside. He said he told the person to stop, and that he saw something in the person’s hands....The Clark County District Attorney’s office said it is still reviewing the case and has requested further information from North Las Vegas Police. Formal charges haven’t been filed against anyone involved. http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/mar/19/report-men-shot-homeowner-were-looking-items-steal/#comments

While I have not talked to James, I know people who have and it is quite clear James is very scared for his future. He is currently on paid administrative leave from CCSD. He knows that will cost thousands of dollars with an uncertain outcome. There is no legal defense fund yet but hopefully there will be one soon. All of this is understandable. He is also thankful no one was killed, which goes to James character.
I believe James when he said he saw something in a guys hand and that is probably why he fired.
It also shameful that none of thugs have been charged in this case yet. Why? The paper said no one has been formally charged? From early reports, it says James has been charged with several crimes. Maybe he hasn't been charged by the DA.
The paper says these thugs already burgled one house before trying to rob Jame's home. Clearly, these thugs are scum of the earth and not worthy of any sympathy whatsoever. They are selfish slobs who think they have the right to take things that are not theirs and ruin people's lives. Not only did effect James and his family, they also screwed over Jame's students at Desert Pines and put a planned field trip/competition in jeopardy. The thugs have no soul.
Please continue to pray for Jame's and his family's welfare. They need it.

  1. Once formal charges are filed, the clock starts ticking on the prosecution to put up or shut up in court. For that reason, they often wait to file charges until they are finished gathering evidence.

I feel very sorry for James Bulah. If he is lucky, and the judge and jury are sympathetic, he may get off with a suspended sentence or probation. However, I don't think he will be acquitted.

He reacted out of anger and a desire for revenge against the people who robbed him in the past. I don't feel bad for the scumbags he hit (they had it coming), but what if it had turned out they were retrieving a runaway cat rather than stealing from his truck? What if an early-morning jogger had been hit by his bullets, or by the out-of-control getaway truck? I am sure that Mr. Bulah is already agonizing over these possibilities; I don't think he deserves further punishment. However, I don't think he should be held up as some kind of vigilante hero, either.

  2. A BLACK MAN GETTING JUSTICE? IN LAS VEGAS?

If my memory serves me, O.J. Simpson got LIFE IN PRISON for being at the scene of a robbery. He DIDN'T HAVE A WEAPON. He DIDN'T SHOOT ANYONE.

Bye Bye James. You forgot where you live.

  3. To gone, normally, would have just dismissed your comment, but the more I see in VCegas, the more I really wonder if there is some truth to your statement.
O.J didn't get life, but about 8 years, I think.
Last week, a black woman was arrest for murder when she stabbed her boyfriend who had attacked her and then was attacking her sister. And she got arrested?
To Jill, I am not sure if he will be found guilty. I think there will be a good chance of jury nullification.

  4. I pray that someday the man in charge of charging James Bulah with a crime, someday has to walk in James's shoes and come face-to-face with thugs threating him, his family or his property.
