LVRJ and Las Vegas Sun: Hypocrites

99.9% of the time, when there is a local story and or a story that has local implications, the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Las Vegas Sun allow people to comment on the their stories. It doesn't matter if the story is about someone being arrested or has died. suicide or murder, it doesn't matter. This week, when the CEO of a local casino committed suicide, they allowed comments. When a baby was murdered, they allowed comments.
But when Harry Reid's wife was seriously injured in a car accident, both papers refused to allow comments about the crash. While there would have been some bad comments, there would also be some well wishers.
So, why are the local papers protecting Harry Reid? Is he not a big enough man to withstand comments on a personal issue? The local papers don't care when it is an average person, why should they care about Harry Reid?
Hypocrites.

  1. Strange request and it has nothing to do with this post, but I came across your blog when looking for a Wisconsin Badger bar in Las Vegas. Me and a couple of buddies from Milwaukee are headed out to Las Vegas next week. We are all huge Badger fans. I was wondering if there is a place to watch the Wisconsin tournament game with other badger fans. Would like to get away from the bustle of the sportsbooks during the Badgers game. Do you think this Badger Cafe place would have the game? Thanks. I'll check back.
Also, nice blog. Good content. As a former blogger who now has a limited blog, I understand the work that goes into this. Take care and thanks.

  2. I don't think they're protecting Harry Reid. I think they're protecting their own behinds. Certain topics draw heated comments that need to be removed by staff due to obscenity or libel. Due to the sensitive nature of the story (a tragic accident) and the connection to Harry Reid, the comment section would quickly degenerate into nasty mud-slinging from both the vehement Reid-haters and the reflexive Reid-defenders. Newspaper staff would have to constantly monitor the rapidly-arriving comments to remove those that violate community standards. Given the job cuts over the past year, they don't have the staff resources for that.

  3. Roger, The Rum Runner is a Badger bar and it has a couple of locations. Tropicanna and Spencer is the closest to the Strip and there is another on the Boulder strip, just south of Boulder Hwy and Russell, on Boulder Hwy. Both have a cafe attached and I think both are called the Badger Cafe. Whether they are showing the games, I'm not sure, though I suspect they will. If it is like Packer games, the place will be packed with Badger fans.

  4. Jill, the Sun does a good job monitoring comments and removing nasty comments. The LVRJ really doesn't do much monitoring.
Of course there will be nasty comments because Reid is a very polarizing person in Nevada, but they allow comments on almost anything except about Reid and the accident and some editorials from the Sun's editor.
