Why Some Bicyclists Get Killed

I was driving down St. Rose Parkway in Henderson today, and St. Rose is about as close to being a freeway as you can get without being an official freeway. For much of the road, the speed limit is 55 and at the northern end, just before you get to the I-215, the speed limit drops down to about 45.
Today, we had a close encounter with a bicycle rider and it almost ended badly, for the bicyclist, as he almost ended up like a bug on a wind shield.
We were in the 2nd lane of traffic to the right, and it was a right turn only lane and the was a bicycle rider who was bound and determined to get in front of our car and move over to the third lane. This rider had all the bells and whistles of a good rider- the bike clothes, helmet, expensive bike and an I-Pod on his arm. He tried to move over, but didn't use any arm signals or made any attempt to indicate he wanted move over. He just tried to move over when our car was about 2 feet in back of him. We slammed on our brakes and blew our horn to indicate our displeasure with him being a jerk.
He eventually got into the third lane and at the stop light, he blew through a red light.
While it is sad when someone dies in a car-bike accident, when you have jerks like this guy, it is not surprising when bicyclists die in accidents.
