The Reno area has had their share of bad luck recently. Earlier this year, there was an Amtrak-train crash that killed about 7 people, the Reno Airshow disaster which hurt or killed around 60 people, there was motorcycle gang fight and today, there was a major brush fire that damaged or destroyed 25 homes, burned 2000 acres and indirectly killed 1 person by heart attack.
From the Reno Gazette Journal: Approximately 25 homes were affected by the fire, Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said at a press conference for the Caughlin Fire.
About 1,700 to 2,000 acres have burned, he said. The cause of the fire is being investigated. Investigators have a "pretty good idea" of what may have caused the fire, but officials want to pin that down before releasing more details.
Winds are expected to lay down tonight, a development that should help firefighters. Snow may help with hot spots.
"I can tell you it is going to be an expensive fire," Hernandez said when asked about the cost of the fire, including property damage.
To say this is a multimillion dollar fire is not far fetched, he said. "It's going to be significant.
The forward movement of the Caughlin Fire has been stopped, Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said.
One firefighter suffered first- and second-degree burns, but other details, including the identity of the firefighter, were not available.
Reno Police Chief Steve Pitts says 150 law enforcement and 160 Nevada National Guard assisting by protecting homes and property in the evacuated area. They will go door to door to assist those who may have stayed in homes and taken shelter there.
The goal is to get people back into their homes on Saturday. http://www.rgj.com/article/20111118/NEWS/311180001/Caughlin-Fire-not-getting-bigger-cost-will-millions?odyssey=modnewswelltextFRONTPAGEp
Good luck to those affected and those in the Las Vegas area, it's coming this way. Hopefully, we won't have any problems up in Mount Charleston.
