From the San Francisco Chronicle:
A
former Disneyland employee who says she was forbidden to wear a Muslim
head scarf at work has filed a lawsuit against the Walt Disney Co.
for discrimination.
The federal suit was filed Monday in Los Angeles on behalf of Imane Boudlal.
Boudlal was a restaurant hostess at the Anaheim theme park but hasn't worked there for about two years.
Boudlal says she was forbidden to wear the head scarf because it wasn't part of her approved work costume.
Disney
officials say they gave Boudlal "multiple options" to accommodate her
religious belief but she refused to wear a specially designed hat
instead or to accept jobs away from customers. Spokeswoman Suzi Brown tells the Los Angeles Times (lat.ms/Pecssl) Disney has a long history of accommodating the religious requests of employees.
My guess is the plaintiff knew what happens at Disney and their costumes and uniforms. Disney shouldn't have to accommodate religious clothing. Would they have accept Amish or Hutterite women's bonnets? A Catholic nun's habit? Of course not.
A reader commented this: this case has been going on for years, she once had Gloria Allred as her
mouthpiece. She worked as a hostess in one of the themed restaurants
in the Grand Californian and was content with the assigned uniform and
didn't use a head scarf. After some time she started to show up to work
with one and Disney decided she needed one that matched the theme, at
least color-wise, plus the staff in this restaurant wear a hat. They
came up with the hat with a side veil and she rejected it. She started
to show up late for work, or show up with advisers. Disney offered her a
job outside of the restaurant which she rejected, she led protests
outside of the resort, got Allred involved and stopped showing up for
work, even when contacted by Disney she refused to work. Now she's
coming back claiming religious discrimination and wrongful dismissal
Boudial is looking for a quick payday and hopefully, she will not get it.
