The motto of the Boy Scouts is "Be Prepared". The 2nd motto should be "Don't do stupid things".
From the Las Vegas Sun: One Las Vegas man died in the heat Saturday while another man and four Boy Scouts were rescued with heat-related illness in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, according to a Lake Mead spokeswoman.
According to a media release, Clawson Bowman Jr., 69, was found dead at 3:21 p.m. after an afternoon of searching that began around 1 p.m. when park rangers received a report from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office. Four Boy Scouts were lost, the sheriff reported, near Arizona Hot Springs. Park rangers and firefighters were dispatched.
Then, at 2:21 p.m., rangers received a call reporting that two adult males were suffering from heat stroke in the same area.
Bowman was found about one mile from the trail head and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Mohave County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
The second adult male was located at 3:42 p.m. and was airlifted to safety.
The Boy Scouts maintained phone communication with park rangers throughout the search, park spokeswoman Christie Vanover said. They were located by Metro Police air support at 4:59 p.m.
“Our sympathies go out to the Bowman family,” said Vanover. “We are thankful that, with the support of around 30 first responders, the others were safely rescued. The boys were very brave this afternoon as they tried to explain their location to our dispatchers.”

While I sympathize with the scouts and those hurt and the guy who died, they should not have been hiking on the hottest day of the year. The hike could have waited for cooler weather but they chose to hike during 110 or more temperatures.
Same goes with Foothill High School, holding their graduation outside on the hottest night of the year, expecting their band to hang out for 4 hours in the heat, and then clean up afterwards, just to save a few dollars, when the temperatures were about 107 at the start of the graduation. Just plain stupidity.
