From the Chicago: A 9-year-old boy and at least six other people were wounded and two were killed in separate attacks this afternoon and evening on the city's South and Far South side, officials said, citing preliminary information.
The boy was traveling in a car with his mother when the vehicle was struck by gunfire, a police source said.
He was taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, where he is in critical condition being treated for a bullet wound to the chest, police said.
The boy and his mother were traveling near East 67th Street and South Evans Avenue in the Park Manor neighborhood about 5:30 p.m., authorities said, where they saw a group of people arguing.
The mother continued driving when she heard as many as five gunshots, authorities said. As she was driving off, the boy shouted, "Mommy, I'm shot," before the mother discovered he was shot in the chest, authorities said.
The mother drove her son to Comer, where he was taken into surgery.
Three people were shot about 7:25 p.m. on the 12300 block of South Emerald Avenue in the city's West Pullman neighborhood, said Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.
A 25-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man were each shot in the leg. Another man, 33, suffered a wound to his abdomen, Greer said.

Chicago seems to have become the shooting/murder capital of the U.S., and seems to be even worse than Juarez, Mexico, a former high murder city.
