At least five people were killed and more than 50 were injured when a northbound Amtrak train derailed Tuesday night in Port Richmond, Mayor Nutter said.
Scores of emergency personnel swarmed over more than a half-dozen toppled train cars, trying to reach injured and dazed passengers. Some people were reported trapped in the train, and crews were cutting into the cars to try to free the injured. Ladder 10 was the first to respond to the scene. When firefighters arrived, they found two people under the train, a fire official said. Train 188, bound to New York City from Washington, had stopped at 30th Street Station just minutes before the accident, which occurred near a curve near Wheatsheaf Lane and I-95.
Initial reports indicated the train derailed as it was entering the curve. Nutter, who hurried to the scene, said he and his aides had been on the tracks. "It is an absolute, disastrous mess," he said. "Never seen anything like this in my life." He said authorities had not determined the cause of the accident.Based on what the news is saying, it would not surprise me if the train was going to fast. My 2nd guess is that it may be terrorism.
Either way, it is a very bad scene and hope they don't find any more dead.
