West Las Vegas Gets A Dollar General: Whopee

West Las Vegas has been without a major store in the area for many, many years. The last grocery store left well over 5 years ago, I believe. The reason why no large business wants to locate there is crime. Crime in the area and crime in the store. The reason why stores don't want to go to West Las Vegas is because they have to hire security guards in a futile attempt to stop shoplifting and robberies.
Well today, the Dollar General decided to take the chance and build in West Las Vegas. They will be located in the area around Lake Mead and MLK, which is a borderline bad area.
From the Las Vegas: West Las Vegas will be getting a new grocery store after the City Council agreed to sell a 5-acre plot to a developer Wednesday.
Developer Laurich Properties Inc., led by Hank Gordon, agreed to purchase three retail pads in the city-owned Las Vegas Enterprise Park, located on the southwest corner of West Lake Mead Boulevard and North Martin Luther King Boulevard. The total sale price of the space is about $1.18 million.
One of the pads will be developed into a Dollar General grocery store, which Gordon said will help fill a need in the area.
The plot of land has
sat vacant for many years, and Gordon initially targeted it to build a Food4Less store. But when the economy crashed, the retailer backed out, he said.
“Overcoming the image of the Las Vegas economy has made it an uphill battle bringing new retailers here,” Gordon said. “We believe in Las Vegas and we’re putting our money where our mouth is.”
There are no tenants yet for the other two retail pads, but Gordon said he’s in discussions with several companies.
The Dollar General store will offer both grocery items and general merchandise, Gordon said.

The Las Vegas Sun proclaims that Dollar general is a grocery store, which they are not. The mostly sell very cheap food items which is limited in what they sell and a lot of cheap merchandise. For this neighborhood, it's probably a good fit, as long they have tight security.
In no way is this a Wal Mart, Smiths, Food 4 Less, Albertsons and Vons, all grocery stores in the Vegas area. If Dollar General is successful, they maybe they can attract a real grocery store, but I really have my doubts.
Good luck to Dollar General and good luck to the residents of West Las Vegas. Here is your chance to show if you really deserve to have businesses invest in your area or not. The leaders of the area need to tell the thugs in the area, and there are many thugs of every race in the area, to stop their thuggery and let the business succeed. Otherwise, no other large business will invest in West Las Vegas for another 10 years.
