Congresswoman Giffords: Very Long Road To Recovery

When Congresswoman Giffords was shot on Saturday, we have had several news sources state what kind of road to recovery Giffords will have. I will put my 2 cents in.
I have worked with traumatic brain injury patients both in a nursing home setting and a school setting and from what I have heard, Giffords is in for a very long recovery that will last months and years.
Giffords has lost basic skills that she will have to relearn. It may be eating, talking, walking, going to the bathroom, feeding herself, dressing herself or other basic skills. She is going to need extensive occupational, speech and physical therapy for years to come. She is going to have to coordinate her left side with her right side and that is not easy.
She is going to have relearn academic skills as well. She will have to learn to read, write, count and participate in group activities.
Bottom line is this: even though her office and maybe her doctors are projecting positive outcomes, it does not come easy or fast to have a positive outcome. It's going to take months and years for her to recover, if she ever recovers. It is possible she may never recover and she will need assistance with her basic cares for the rest of her life.
I hope the best for her and I do hope she does recover, maybe not as a congress member but at least as a human being.
