The Other Side Of The Story: CCSD Employee Accussed of Sex crimes

The LVRFJ reported with big fanfare about how a CCSD employee is being accused of sexual crimes while using a CCSD computer.
From the LVRJ: Utah authorities say that one year ago Saturday, a Clark County School District employee was masturbating in his office, sending images over the Internet to a viewer he thought to be a 13-year-old girl.
In fact, the "girl" was an adult working with the Iron County, Utah, Sheriff's Office to snare child molesters.
The case was passed to police in Las Vegas. Eventually, it landed with the school district's own police department.
One year later, Utah investigators wonder why the man, Darren Boyett, 45, a district accounting coordinator, is still on the job and has never been charged.
"It's a shame,'' said Iron County Sheriff's Cpl. Nik Johnson, who handled the case. "I wish we could do more, but the only people that can are in Nevada. ... If I could, I'd go to Vegas and arrest him myself."
Johnson said police first identified Boyett after he posed as a 33-year-old Mesquite man using the screen name "braymyfld" and approached police decoy "drama princess444" in a Yahoo chat room called Utah1.
During conversations between Jan. 15 and Feb. 2, "braymyfld" asked about the girl's sexual history, if she was masturbating and whether she would like to watch him have an orgasm on his webcam.
The contacts all took place after normal work hours on weekdays.
The decoy twice mentioned her age.

Heidi Harris on KDWN went ballestic on her show this morning, even saying this guy could even have contact with students, which is utterly false.
If this guy did what the Utah police said he did, then the book should be thrown at him. He should and be prosecuted.
However, there may be another side of the story that the LVRJ left out.
First, I am a teacher for CCSD, but I don't care who this employee is, I just report the facts.
As a teacher, we are severely limited to what we can see on the Internet because of Internet filters. Most, if not all employees, have restricted Internet access. For instance, you cannot even see this wonderful blog on a CCSD computer. You cannot even download pictures from Google and Yahoo of harmful pictures of puppies and flowers. Porn? Forget about it. Chat rooms, no way.
Further, with the Internet filters, you, in no way, participate in a chat room. No way no how.
Further, there are employees within the CCSD IT department that look for this stuff. How do I know? I have seen several people fired from CCSD for doing bad things on a computer. CCSD takes these things very seriously.
So, I am not sure what happened. If the guy did what the Utah police said is true, hang the guy by his g-string.
But there may be another side of the story.

  1. Your classroom computer is filtered because technically students could access it. Computers in District offices, where this guy works, do not go through the filter because their computers cannot be used by students. It's not an arbitrary policy though, classroom computers are purchased with special funds. The requirements for using those funds stipulate that computers that students may access must be filtered.
