Brian Sandoval has floated an idea of teachers taking a 5% pay cut this next year. I am a conservative teacher who favors lower taxes eliminating waste in government. And I think this is a bad idea.
If Sandoval or Gibbons asked for a 5% pay cut last school year or even during the summer, I may have accepted it. But then the State and CCSD took a $58 million stimulus bribe/payout in the Fall and larded up the budgets of the schools. What Sandoval is asking the teachers to do is subsidize this $58 million payout and the people they hired with the money.
I was against the stimulus when it was proposed and I still think it was a horrible idea to take the money.
Every day, I see waste at the schools. School buses coming to school with one or 2 kids on the bus and most buses coming to school with less than 10 kids on the bus.
In the lunch program, which is mostly subsidized by Federal money, literally tons of food are thrown away every couple of months because kids won't eat school food.
I see the number of administrators increasing, not decreasing. I see an increase of non-teaching professionals in the schools. I see posting for administrator jobs increasing.
I do understand Brian Sandoval's position, but it is not fair to teachers or other school employees to take a pay cut because of the State's or CCSD's stupidity. When CCSD eliminates the fat in the school budgets, then come back to us and talk about a pay cut, but not before.

Gee, Dan, welcome to our world. Don't you know that you're one of the haves, so you need to give up more than anyone else?
ReplyDeleteThanks capper. If they gave us furlough days like you got, then I might reconsider.
