From The Minot Daily News: Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., said Wednesday that the committee is looking into alleged ''mismanagement, malfeasance, retaliation against whistleblowers as well as potential criminal behavior'' in the Aberdeen Area of the IHS, which includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska.
''I believe this type of mismanagement in the region over a long period of time has negatively affected health care provided to the Native Americans,'' Dorgan said in a release. ''These problems must be remedied.''...The investigation centers on the Quentin N. Burdick Memorial Hospital in Belcourt, on North Dakota's Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation, where there have been five different CEOs in about two years....Adult patients who need non-emergency care have been sent to other facilities several times in the last three years because of staff shortages, Dorgan said. At one point those patients were diverted for 270 straight days.
I used to live in Dunseith, ND, so I have some feeling for those in Belcourt, which is right down the road from Dunseith.
Indian health care sucks and that is the best you can say about it. They get doctors, nurses, dentists and other health professionals who have to pay off student loans to go to these Indian reservations, most of which are in the middle of nowhere. They don't want to be there, but they have to be. The equipment they have is usually top notch but they lack the professionals to run it. But when they send their patients away, it is often to cities 100 miles away or more. In Belcourt, they could very well send their patients to Grand Forks or Minot, which is over 100 miles away.
Native Americans have some of the worst health problems in the United States, even though they receive free health care. The federal government runs the health care on Indian reservations and yet it is considered to be one of the worst run health care systems. Why? It shouldn't be and it is the Native Americans who suffer.
Government run health care is not very good. Actually it sucks.
