Nevada Unemployment: Not Good

From the LVRJ: Nevada's jobs market held steady in June, with little change in the unemployment picture.
The Silver State's jobless rate stayed at a seasonally adjusted 11.6 percent from May to June, the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported this morning. In Las Vegas, joblessness rose to 12.1 percent, up from 11.8 percent in May.
The employment department attributed the local gain to typical seasonal fluctuations. The agency doesn't seasonally adjust local rates.
"While we did not see much change for the month, we are still encouraged that the economy is indeed on the mend," said Frank Woodbeck, director of the employment department. "The rate of unemployment is still unacceptably high, and we are diligently working to do what we can on our end to further propel us in the right direction."
Nevada did post job growth from May to June, with 200 new jobs in the private sector. Compared with June 2011, private-sector jobs are up 17,500 positions. That's the strongest year-to-year gain so far in 2012, said Bill Anderson, the employment department's chief economist. The private sector added 14,000 jobs in the first half of 2012, compared with about 12,000 jobs in the same period in 2011.

200 new jobs between May and June?  That sucks and it is not getting any better.  That means that job growth is slowing down.
So, is Nevada better off than 4 years ago?  Nah, didn't think so.

  1. Well, 4 years ago, the crash hadn't quite happened. Are we better off than we were 4 years from election day? Probably.
