Fugitive Taliban boss Mullah Omar declared “victory” Sunday in the prisoner swap that freed Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in exchange for five hardened Guantanamo Bay detainees.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire Afghan Muslim nation, all the mujahedeen and to the families and relatives of the prisoners for this big victory,” said Omar, who was the Taliban head of state between 1996 and 2001.
The rare remarks from the Taliban spiritual leader came amid criticism from Republican politicians who argued the trade may embolden terrorists who seize American hostages — and may have violated the law because the Obama administration failed to notify Congress at least 30 days beforehand.
