Bill Maher had David Stockton on his HBO show and there is a clip of him saying that we need to cut the spending, cut defense spending, ask old rich people to forgo Social security and if you raise taxes, raise taxes on everyone, not just the rich. I agree with him
First, we have a spending problem, not a low tax issue. We bring into the treasury $2,400,000,000,000 a year. We, as a country, can live on that amount. We need to reduce spending and as we have seen with the GSA, there are places where we can cut.
Second, we can and need to reduce spending in the military. It can be done by eliminating some military equipment we don't need and the military doesn't want bu because of politics, the military is forced to have. We can close some more military bases. For instance, do we really need two Air force bases in North Dakota, especially with the cold war pretty much over and the nuclear threat is almost non-existent?
While I would not force the issue, I would think if we ask the elderly who are really well off if they need their social security check to make ends meet. I just don't see Herb Kohl, U.S. Senator from Wisconsin and owner of the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team needing social security. I don't see that Crybaby/Coward Sen. Harry Reid needing social security. So, I think if we can get some of the rich elderly people to forgo Social Security, that may help Social Security last a couple move years.
Finally, if higher taxes are on the table, then higher taxes should be for everyone. President Obama's mantra is tax the rich, but it is the poor and middle class who use Federal spending the most. If we are going to raise taxes, which I don't think is needed, but if do, then raise taxes on everyone instead of making this a class warfare issue. Make everyone have some skin in the game, not just a select few. You would have a better chance of passing the bill instead of playing the class warfare game.
So, David Stockton makes a lot of sense, which probably annoyed Bill Maher tremendously and Maher could not offer an intelligent response, not that he would be able to do so.
