Pawn Stars Review: November 13, 2012

Well, this was a surprise, if my son Manny didn't didn't tell me there was new Pawn Shops tonight, I wouldn't have known.

In the first episode, the first guy brought in a 1925 high school year book in which John Wayne was a senior.
Wayne's real name was Marion Robert Morrison and he went to Glendale high school, near Los Angeles.
http://johnwayne.com/
John Wayne was a big man on campus.  He was class president and a big time athlete.
The guy wanted $1500 and Corey offered $750 and then $800 and that was the deal.
Then the guys talked about Corey's and Chumlee's pictures in their class yearbooks and how they looked.  Chumlee doesn't look the same now but Corey looks the same as he was in high school.
The next guy brought in a Cardinal's ring- a Catholic Cardinal.  He said it was from the 19th century.  The guy wanted $6000.  Time for an expert.  Mark from the Clark County Museum came in.  He said that the Cardinals are normally buried with their rings.  He looked for a sign of papal authority but all it had was a Cross, which it had.  Mark didn't think ring was not real because it lacked any other papal markings.  So, they tested the ring for it's metal's and stones.  The shop has their own gemologist on site, which I didn't know.  He not only appraises the stones and metals, he also apparently makes rings, when needed.  He said the ring had an orange garnet/emerald.  Rick offered $1500 and then $2000 and that was the sale price.
The next lady brought in 4 antique pistols.  The first pistol was an old fake decorative piece.
The second gun was a brass gun, then an early 1800's which was rifled.  And the 4th pistol was from the 1700's and it was worth the most.  It was really decorative on the barrel and the barrel was about 18 to 24 inches long.  It had some silver on it, so it was probably bought by a rich person.
Rick didn't want the first three guns but wanted the4th gun.  Time for an expert, Craig Gottleib.  .He said the gun was from the Persian/Ottoman Empire era.  He said the gun was worth about $2500 to $3500 because it lacked the silver.
Then Craig looked at the discarded gun and one of the guns was actually a very old lighter.  It had a wick on it an it was from the 1800's.  Craig said the lighter was worth about $1200.  The other two guns were trashed.
Rick offered $2700 and the lady went to $3000.  Corey went to $2850 and that was the selling price.
Chumlee then had a picture of Rick, when he had some hair- long wavy brown hair.  (almost like a young Barry Manilow)  If you watch closely, a bug flies by the Old Man's face, almost lands on him and he didn't even bat an eye.  Good camera work by the Old Man.
In the end, they had pictures of a young old man when he was in the Navy.  Then they showed a picture of the Old Man as a baby- and it is a funny prank picture.
In the second episode, the first guy brought in some artifacts- a fire starter and flint stones from the Mesopotamia era.    http://www.mesopotamia.co.uk/
The fire starter looked like brass knuckles and you knocked it over the flint.  Rick thought it came from the Roman period and offered $10 for the set and there was no sale.
The story line of the day was Chumlee bragging he could start a fire the old fashioned way- with rubbing 2 sticks together.
The next guy came in with Johnny Cash's driver license.  It was an old paper license.  It was kind of ripped up and the picture was a young Johnny Cash and the license was from California and1967.  The guy wanted $1000 and Corey offered $700 and the guy was stuck on $1000.  Corey, with Chumlee ripping him, gave him $1000.

The next guy brought in a 1949 Hudson Commodore 8.  The car is the same as above except it was colored cream color and had white walled tires.
The car was mostly original, with just a few replacement parts.  The guy wanted $35,000.  Time for an expert, Danny from Kustom Kounts  They took the car for a spin around the downtown area.  They said this was the same kind of car in Driving Miss Daisy.
Danny said the car was worth about $25,000.  It seems like Danny likes to low ball customers.
The owner came down to $25,000 and Rick offered $20,000 and that was the deal.

The next guy brought in a Mastodon Tusk.
The guy said he he got the tusk in a dig in Florida.  Rick thought it was maybe 10,000 years old.  Rick wanted an expert but the guy said he had to go to work.  Rick offered $400 and then $500 and that was the sale price.  The guy seemed like he was trying to pull a fast one.  Time for  an expert, Tom Lindgren, a fossil specialist.  He said it was authentic fossil ivory and 1000 to 10,000 years old but it was from a walrus instead of a Mastodon.  He thought the tusk was worth about $400-500 a pound and the tusk was about 3 pounds.
Then they had Chumlee trying to start a fire with the 2 sticks and that didn't work out so well.  Then he tried flint and steel.  He got some smoke and sparks going. In the end, Chumlee got the fire going, won the bet and took a day off with pay.
Thanks for stopping by on a Tuesday and see you back on Monday.
