Just after midnight, New Years Day, some men decided it would be a good idea to take out some guns and start firing them in the air. Apparently these fools don't know much about physics, as what goes up must come down and this includes bullets. Well, the cops saw the shooting and confronted the men. According to the NLV police and the Sun, this is what happened: The officers noticed gunfire coming from the front yard of a house in the 600 block of East Glendale Avenue at 12:09 a.m., Bedwell said.
They saw a large group of people in the front yard and saw numerous guns, including at least one high-powered rifle, Bedwell said.
“The officers felt that the danger to the community was such that they had to intervene immediately and they challenged the persons to drop the firearms and they approached them,” he said.
The officers, who were in uniform, identified themselves before giving orders, Bedwell said.
The scene became chaotic, and one of the men pointed a handgun at one of the officers at arms-length, Bedwell said.
“The officer, in his own defense, brushed that firearm away and tried to control it,” Bedwell said.
During the struggle, the officer felt he was going to be shot and fired multiple times at the man, who ran a short distance before falling to the ground, Bedwell said.
No one else at the scene was injured in the incident, including the officer, officials said.

Based on other media reports, the man who was shot was a good family man. From the LVRJ: The man, identified by family as Fernando Giovanni Sauceda, a 32-year-old father of five, died in the driveway of his home. Officers arrested four other men for discharging firearms in public and seized five handguns and a rifle....
Friends said Sauceda, who worked in construction in Las Vegas when he wasn't on an Alaskan fishing boat, was a dedicated family man. He married his longtime girlfriend just four weeks before he died. He coached Little League and was very much involved in the lives of his children, who were ages five to 13.
"On report cards, Cs were not accepted in his house," said his sister-in-law, Lety Cano, 33.

Sauceda put people's lives in danger and then he, for whatever reason, put a police officer in a position that he feared for his life.

Sometimes good people do stupid things or they don't understand our laws and customs. You don't shoot guns into the air and you don't put police officers in danger. This isn't Mexico or South America where it may be a custom to shoot guns in the air on New Years. This is Las Vegas (and North Las Vegas) and you just don't do things like this. It's dangerous and stupid and a man died because of his stupidity.

Several years ago a friend of mine was shot on New Year's as he was standing on his balcony and some idiots started firing guns in the air. The bullet only grazed his cheek but had the gunman's hand have been turned just a fraction of an inch, my friend would have been dead.
ReplyDeleteCelebratory gunfire used to be common in Louisiana (particularly New Orleans) as well as in many other countries. It is stupid and dangerous, and the cops were right to intervene.

This specific incidence took place in north las vegas where there are 100's of people living in a crammed space & literally EVEWRY idiot comes out and is shooting of thier fire arms. I know because I live 10 miles away. EACH & every year it is ridiculous. I know that there were many many many people shooting thier guns off. How were they able to pinpoint exactly where it was coming from.. Yes ... it is so concentrated ..that before you speculate against the Sauceda family you must know the circumstances. I am not saying the any police officer should take any chances to risk thier own life. I am saying that there has to be more to the story. I guess you must make an example out of someone..why not start with a father of 5 who was a soccer dad. new;ly married. while the drunken idiotsw who shoot off thier guns anyways still do. WHAT ABOUT THEM? GET YOUR STORY STRAIGHT. NEW YEARS EVE IN LAS VEGAS OR NORTH LAS VEGAS... there had to be other reasons that a team of special unit police officers were available and ready to dis arm this 1 household of family all related and children taken out at gun point.. sloppy.

People are going to trash talk about him, but untill something like this happens to one of their family members, they're NEVER going to understand what really happened. Even though I feel its wrong for Fernando to have shot in the air, I feel its even wrose that police dont't seen to know how to do their job right. Police, unfortunately, have higher power than anybody else. If they say say you're a drug dealer, prostitute, etc. People are going to believe it, even if it's a total lie.(hopefully this has made you think a little). As for the children taken out at gun point, that is just unbelievable ! You know some or all of those children are going to grow up hating cops. Just plain Ridiculous of police.I hope the family is copeing well with their lost. My prayer go out to them. Rest In Paradise Fernando Giovanni Sauceda.
