The University of Nevada System is on a PR binge. They recently hired the Las Vegas Sun to lead the PR to bring more money to the bloated college system.
This is the system that has the following degrees or certificates: Romance Languages, Senior Adult Theater, Spanish and another major - Spanish for Professions, Women Studies, Multidisciplinary Studies, Latin American Studies, Afro American Studies, Italian Studies (Minor), History, Great Works (certificate), Ethnic Studies (minor)English, Art and Historyhttp://majors.unlv.edu/Then you have advanced degrees- Masters and Doctorates: Anthropology, Art, Creative Writing, English, History and Screenwriting

Well, the Pr Firm of the Las Vegas Sun Inc. came out this article today: Nevada’s higher education levels are holding the region back from diversifying its economy and the city has become a modern-day version of Pittsburgh or Detroit, which once relied on one sector for its growth to its detriment, the director of a UNLV-based think tank said today. http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2011/jan/07/low-education-levels-holding-nevadas-economy-back-/
So, the Sun uses a UNLV hack to advocate for money for UNLV. Yep, that's an honest article.
And Las Vegas is going to be like Detroit or Pittsburgh because we don't give more money to the university system? Umm sure.
Apparently this hack of UNLV employee doesn't recognize the difference between manufacturing and entertainment. Is he suggesting that casinos overseas or even in the U.S. will over take Las Vegas? Is he suggesting that the SEIU will be like the UAW and Teamsters and destroy the steel and automotive industry within?
This is the 2nd idiotic article of the day by UNLV and UNR via the Las Vegas Sun: Earlier in the day, the college system, err, Sun wrote this: Gov. Brian Sandoval’s guiding philosophy in building a state budget has been his promise not to raise taxes or fees.
In this economy, he argues, businesses and families just can’t afford to pay more to fund their government. Except, that is, for students.
Sandoval this week suggested to higher education officials that they could “significantly” increase tuition to colleges and universities to offset his proposed cuts in state funding, according to higher education officials.
They were unhappy, wondering why they appeared to be exempt from Sandoval’s viewpoint on the budget and economy.

First, even if tuition is raised, tuition will still be reasonable, especially compared to private colleges.
Further, how much is the university doing to reduce costs for it's students? Are they reducing text book costs? Text books cost almost as much as tuition and it is one of the biggest frauds around.
Are they reducing student fees that support clubs, buildings, athletic facilities? No, I doubt it.
Are they eliminating athletic programs that don't pay their way? With the exception of basketball for UNLV and UNR and maybe UNR football, college athletics don't pay their way. Why not eliminate those sports?
Fact is, is the university budgets are still bloated, but the greedy university says to the Nevada taxpayer, screw you, we want our money. We don't care if you can't afford it, just give us our money because we are so much better than you.
But then what do you expect from a university system that hired a person like Dina Titus and others like her who are not qualified to work in another job.
