The Southern Nevada Water Authority is one of the most incompetent and corrupt agencies in Nevada and their policies are killing businesses one by one.
From the LVRJ: You can cry in your beer if you want, but you'll have to find
someplace else to do it. As promised, Larry's Hideaway has shut its
doors for good in response to a sharp rise in its water bill.
"No
reprieve," said Brent Howard, trustee for the watering hole near Rancho
Drive and Cheyenne Avenue. "We're officially closed."....
Howard announced the pending closure in early June after the
struggling business was hit with a new $400 monthly fee by the Southern
Nevada Water Authority.
He said the infrastructure surcharge was
the "final straw" for Larry's Hideaway, which has been a fixture at the
western edge of North Las Vegas for decades....
The water authority started collecting the infrastructure surcharge
in May to help pay down roughly $2.5 billion in construction debt and
finish building an $800 million intake at Lake Mead to keep water
flowing to the valley even if the reservoir continues to shrink.
Officials
for the valley's wholesale water agency have acknowledged that
businesses are bearing the brunt of the new fee, which has been
especially painful to companies with large but little-used water lines
feeding their fire sprinklers and hydrants. http://www.lvrj.com/news/last-call-sounds-for-last-time-at-larry-s-hideaway-161183975.html
I was going to bring this up last week, however a man was killed during the construction of the 3rd straw and so I didn't think it was appropriate to bring it up then.
But the SNWA is run by an incompetent board, led by Steve Sisolak and the administration. They are building a 3rd straw and doing it incompetently. The death of worker is just the latest in big screw ups by the SNWA. Previously, the tunnel has been flooded and now, the drilling is going at an extremely slow pace that they will have come back for more rate increases to try and finish the project.
Then this same board and administration thinks it is a good idea to buy as much ranch land and get the water rights and then run a huge pipeline from Northern Nevada to Las Vegas. SNWA already has purchased the land but now they want to build a huge pipeline at a price of who knows what and who knows where just to bring in water to Las Vegas. Only people on the take or are incredibly stupid would even think of doing this project.
What the SNWA needs to do is stop the 3rd straw, drop the pipeline and sell the ranches and concentrate on cheaper alternatives and work on getting more more water from the Colorado River and other rivers and bodies of water. This should be done now, because the population of Clark County is either declining or staying the same.
Meanwhile, stores are being charged hundreds of dollars because of the size of their water pipes, even though they only use $50 or less in water a month.
We need to get rid of the SNWA commissioners and administration and get rid of the incompetence and corruption within the SNWA.
