There has been a scandal down at Lackland Air Force Base in which some women trainees have been sexually assualted by training Instructors during basic training. Well, the San Francisco Chronicle asked this bozo from San Francisco to give an opinion on the subject.
From The San Francisco Chronicle: It may mean little. Aaron Belkin, a professor of political science San Francisco State University,
argues that the organizational culture of the military engenders sexual
violence, thus ending rape within the ranks is a very, very tough
proposition. Belkin is also the director of the Palm Center, which
studies gender and military issues, at the UCLA law school, and the author of a new book, “Bring Me Men.”
“The military has contradictory expectations about sexual violence,”
Belkin said. Many military leaders want policies that promote prevention
training to minimize violence. At the same time, on an informal level,
service members are expected to endure rape as part of initiation into
the warrior community. That affects different individuals differently, he
said.
In a way, it’s no surprise that military culture engenders violence.
It members, after all, are recruited and taught to kill people.
Belkin notes that the military training gives commanders almost
unlimited authority over those they command and train, something he
likens to the “master/slave dynamic.” The combination, often results in
rape, he said.

Service members have to endure rape as part of the initiation into the warrior community? WTF? Clearly, this moron has never been in the service otherwise he would not have have said anything so stupid.
Further, many people who enter the service are not trained to kill. From those who work in the medical field, paper pushers, mechanics etc, there are many people in the service who are not trained to kill and it certainly doesn't start in basic training. In basic training, you learn how to obey orders, get physically fit, shoot a gun, self protection, learn in the classroom etc. Learning to kill someone while in basic training is not on the schedule- that comes later for only a select few..
I went through Lackland when I was in the Air Force and they stressed ethics and I am sure that is the same with the other services.
But I guess this moron is a liberal and from San Francisco, so he really has no clue what he is talking about.
